Captain Hayward has been slower to get established than some of my other
HPs. Certainly the ones planted where the compost pile used to be have
an inherent advantage, so its hard to know if the difference is in the
plant or the location. But this year it has sent out enough sprawly
canes to allow the kind of hard cut back which HPs are reputed to want.
The resultant increase in bud set is extremely encouraging. In my
climate, Captain Hayward looks to be developing into a fine plant with a
very satisfying rebloom.
